Editor’s Corner: The President deserves respect

Tuesday, July 23, 2024

President Joe Biden deserves the respect of the American people. I don’t care if you believe in his policies or not. He gave 50 years of his life dedicated to public service and until Jan. 20, 2025, he remains the President of the United States.

Am I a big Biden fan? No. However, I do know what it looks and feels like to live with the lasting affects of COVID. Maybe he is getting old, but when I hear our President speak, I hear a brilliant man stumbling with his words and his memory. I do the exact same thing and have ever since July 2020 when I was hospitalized with COVID.

Unless you are a long hauler, right now you are thinking I am crazy and have lost my mind. “The man has dementia,” you say. Pay attention. The symptoms are very similar, but they are also very different.

Biden, who was raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and New Castle County, Delaware, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware in 1965 and a law degree from Syracuse University in New York in 1968.

After graduating from law school, Biden returned to Delaware to work as an attorney before quickly turning to politics, serving on the New Castle County council from 1970 to 1972. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972 at the age of 29, becoming the fifth youngest senator in history. About a month, later his wife and infant daughter were killed in a car accident, and his two sons were seriously injured. Although he contemplated suspending his political career, Biden was persuaded to join the Senate in 1973, and he went on to win reelection six times, becoming Delaware’s longest-serving senator.

As a senator, Biden focused on foreign relations, criminal justice, and drug policy.

He took the oath of office as Vice President on Jan. 20, 2009 and again in 2013. In 2015, he lost his eldest son to brain cancer.

In 2020, he defeated Donald Trump for President by more than seven million popular votes.

As you can see, Biden has not had an easy life, but remained dedicated to the people of the United States. He remained dedicated to the fight for freedom.

Yes, I believe it was best for the country that Biden stepped down and yes I believe Trump will win the race. I personally wish the American citizens had a third choice.

With this all said, I remain firm that the President of the United States deserves our respect, no matter who it is.
