Houston, Texas - Tenaris has awarded $112,000 in scholarships to Mississippi County high school seniors on the 10th anniversary of the company’s Merit Award program.
The company recognized 45 high school students from Armorel, Blytheville, Gosnell, KIPP, Manila, Osceola and Rivercrest high schools for their academic performance during a ceremony held May 8 at the Arkansas Northeastern College Center for Technology.
Tenaris presented one student a $20,000 Student of the Year scholarship with four runners-up receiving a $3,000 award each, and 40 Merit Awards valued at $2,000 each.
James Simpson, senior at Rivercrest High School received the high honor of Student of the Year, a scholarship provided over the course of four years to a student pursuing a four-year degree and majoring in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field, among other criteria. Simpson will be attending Arkansas State University where he will study computer and data science.
The Merit Award is one of Tenaris’s longest running global community programs. It first was introduced in Arkansas during the 2014-2015 school year.
“What better way to close out the academic year and celebrate 10 years of our Merit Award program than by recognizing students who have demonstrated academic leadership in the classroom and community,” said Luis Reyes, Tenaris plant senior director for operations in Hickman. “With these scholarships, we aim to support the students’ continued growth during this next phase of their educational journey.”
Education is at the center of Tenaris’s community focus and since 2010, the company has invested approximately $4.9 million in education-based programs in Arkansas.
