Helen Wilson Sweat
Helen Wilson Sweat, 94, of Blytheville, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, in Gosnell Health and Rehab in Gosnell. Helen was born in Mantee, Miss., to Dell and Grace Buck Wilson. Helen came to Blytheville in 1948 to work at the old Blytheville Hospital as an LPN until she married in 1950. She started working at Mississippi County Hospital when it was built. She attended her first nursing class at MCCC to obtain RN status. She worked in various nursing positions through the years and later in life worked at Home Health until her retirement at the age of 83. Helen enjoyed working in her yard and flower beds, painting and wallpapering her home, trips to the Smoky Mountains and their mobile home at Norfork Lake. She learned to water ski at the age of 50. Helen was baptized to the Methodist faith at an early age and attended Lake St. Methodist Church until it closed. Afterwards, she attended Fairview Baptist Church until her hearing failed and her health declined.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Bud” Sweat; son, Ronald Wayne “Ronnie” Sweat; two stepsons, Richard Sweet and Russell Sweat; a stepdaughter, Barbara Sweat McDermott; a step-grandson, Greg McKuin; and three sisters, Kate Worsham, Ann Hill and Betty Wilson.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Teresa Sweat; a sister, Rose Mary Crawford; a brother, Steve Wilson and wife Glenice; a granddaughter, Briah Fountain, and husband Jason; step-grandson, Ronnie McDermott, and wife Mia; and seven great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Branscum, Tatum Fountain, Jase Fountain, Jaxon Fountain, Bella McDermott, Claire McDermott and Grayson McDermott.
At Helen’s request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Connie Ash/Mended Paws Sanctuary and the Blytheville Humane Society. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.cobbfuneralhome.com.
