Gail Mathews Berry

Gail Mathews Berry, 71, passed away in Nashville, Tenn., on July 26, 2023. Gail was born in Little Rock on July 14, 1952, to Robert E. Mathews and Marjorie Mathews. She married the love of her life, Kenneth L. “Sonny” Berry, on Aug. 7, 1971. 

Gail is survived by her mother, Marjorie Mathews; her loving husband, Sonny; daughter, Allison Hadley; son-in-law, Benson Hadley; and granddaughters, Liza Hadley, and Emelia Hadley. She is also survived by her brother, Mark Mathews; sister-in-law, Beth Seward; nephew, Houston Mathews; sister-in-law, Charla Mathews; and niece, Andrea (Joel) Reynolds. Gail is survived by many friends that brought much enjoyment to her life.

Gail was preceded in death by her father, Robert E. Mathews; daughter, Brooke Berry; and brother, Stuart Mathews. 

Gail was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. There was no greater joy to her than spending time with her family. They were the light of her life and her primary interest. To know Gail was to know her loving spirit and welcoming smile. She was quick to make friends and played a critical role in the lives of her granddaughters. The girls loved their Gigi dearly and shared a special relationship.

Gail loved flowers, gardening, playing mahjong and was active in the community as member of The Centennial Club, Seed and Weed Garden Club, PEO Chapter CI and Chapter E, and Belle Meade Country Club. Traveling with Sonny and her friends was one of her greatest pleasures. Gail was always excited to celebrate an occasion with her family and friends. An afternoon drive with Sonny and her dog, Coco, was one of her favorite things to do. Her enthusiasm for adventure was contagious and she was a true joy to spend time with.

Gail was dedicated to her Christian faith and lived it in her daily life. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Blytheville for 40 years. After moving to Nashville, she became an active member of Woodmont Christian Church in 2014. She loved to fellowship with her Thursday Night Bible Study Group.

Visitation will be held at Woodmont Christian Church located at 3601 Hillsboro Road, Nashville, TN on Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 1-3 p.m. in the Carpenter Chapel. A memorial service will immediately follow at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary. A graveside service for family and close friends will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Steele, Mo.
