Gosnell used an 18-2 third-quarter run to take control of its 3A-3 conference matchup with host Piggott, Tuesday night, before beating the Mohawks, 66-54.
After the lead changed hands eight times in the first two quarters, Gosnell (2-3, 1-1 3A-3) led narrowly 22-21 at halftime.
Piggott’s Shawn-Hudson Seegroves opened the third quarter with a bucket for two of his 19 second-half points and game-high 24. But the 23-22 lead would be the Mohawks’’ last of the game.
Gosnell’s Charles Kennemore answered with a putback, followed by back-to-back three-pointers from teammates Ethan Suthern and Floyd Williams.
Williams, who had 10 of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter, increased the Pirate lead to 40-25 with 2:10 left in the period.
Piggott closed the gap to 42-34 going into the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to six early in the final quarter.
However, the Pirates answered with an 8-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Devan Spicer who stretched the lead to 15 with about six minutes left. Gosnell’s lead swelled to as much as 18 points, and Pirate head coach Charlie Sullivan emptied the bench down the stretch.
Behind Williams’ 16, Gosnell’s Hayden McDaniel scored 12, which included draining four three-pointers. TJ Reed added nine, Taderian Partee six, Daniel Sullivan five, Parker Brasfield four, Rylan Jenkins, Suthern, and Spicer three each, Kennemore and Maurion Hattiex two each, and Jake Reams one.
Behind Seegroves’ 24, Nate Brantley scored 20, Austin Seal six and Brandon Palmer four for the Mohawks.
