The City & County Youth Program is gearing up to help ensure the success of Mississippi County children in the following school year.

Program director Shannon “Duck” Sims has spearheaded the program since 1986, helping provide the youth with backpacks and the supplies needed to succeed in the classroom. With the help of the community, the program is also looking to add a nutritional element to this year’s anniversary.

The annual picnic known as “Kid’s Day”, was re-established in 2008 by the Blytheville City Council and then mayor Barrett Harrison. Since then, it’s brought the community together each year on the first Saturday in August. Despite being cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the board is hopeful that the community can return to continuing the tradition.

The program began as a city-wide event, but has grown into a county wide event over the years. Sims stated that the program has partnered with every school in the county. The organization has also received recognition across the state. In just its second year, the youth program was acknowledged by then Arkansas governor Bill Clinton.

Sims stated that none of the contributions to the children would be possible without the help of the board members, sponsors and donors. As in years past, the Kenny Jackson award will be given to a person making significant contributions to the organization.

Anyone looking to make a donation to the organization can contact Sims at (870)-623-3179.
