The Blytheville City Council voted to approve an ordinance for Nucor Coatings to lease an industrial building at 5888 East County Road near the city’s industrial limits.

The building was previously occupied by Precoat Metals and in addition to the lease agreement, Nucor Coatings requested and will receive the city’s assistance in acquiring and renovating the building through industrial development revenue bonds, a $150 million project.

The council also voted to waive the competitive bid process to purchase equipment for the Blytheville Waterworks Department. The water department received a quote from Henard Utility Products for Badger Meter equipment and accessories for the price of $99,242.50 excluding taxes.

The city’s current electric water meters were purchased and installed by Henard Utility.

“Over the years, we’ve been able to work directly with Henard in not only meter supplies but with other supplies throughout our water department,” Mayor James Sanders said. “They’re also one of the companies that are backed by the Arkansas Municipal League.”

Sanders also assured the council that according to city finance director John Callens, this was the best price for service available to the city.

The council also approved a motion to amend the 2020 budget by assisting the old fireman’s pension trust fund by contributing up to $86,000.

The increase stems from the city’s general fund surplus and will also qualify the fund for approximately $27, 932 from the state.
