Blytheville police are investigating the death of a three-year-old who was shot.

On Friday, at approximately 4 p.m., officers of the Blytheville responded to a 911 medical emergency call at the Chickasaw Courts Housing area on South Division in Blytheville.

"The call advised that there was an unresponsive child at that location," Blytheville Police Chief Ross Thompson wrote in a press release. "When officers arrived on scene, they discovered that the parents had already taken the child to the emergency room. That same day at approximately 5:30 pm the Mississippi County Coroner’s office reported to the Blytheville Police Department that the child was 3 years old and had died as the result of an accidental electrocution. On Monday, October 12, 2020 Arkansas State Medical Examiner’s office contacted the Blytheville Police Department reporting that an autopsy performed by their office determined that the child died as the result of a gunshot wound. Evidence and information collected in the Mississippi County Corner’s office and the Blytheville Police Department’s investigations indicate that the child and parents were asleep in a bed with a loaded firearm at the time of the incident. The case has been turned over the prosecuting attorney’s office for possible charges."
