A Craighead County deputy was injured when a suspect fired shots after crashing his vehicle during a chase near Caraway on Monday afternoon.

According to Craighead County Sheriff’s Department chief investigator Justin Rolland, Eugene Collins is in custody after firing at the deputy and a Caraway police officer.

Rolland said the deputy, whose name has not been released, was struck by pellets from the ammunition and suffered minor injuries.

He was taken to a local hospital, treated and released.

The deputy is currently on leave.

Rolland said around 4:30 p.m., Monday, Craighead County authorities received a be on the lookout call from Poinsett County where Collins apparently fled.

Craighead County deputies were later notified that Collins was in the 2200 block of County Road 847.

Rolland said police chased Collins who crashed his car and then fired at a Caraway police officer and the deputy.
