This weekend M&D Outfitters, along with Main Street Blytheville and the National Wild Turkey Federation, will be hosting Northeast Arkansas’ third annual Duck Calling and Gumbo Contest in Blytheville. More than 30 teams have signed up to participate thus far in the gumbo contest.
The event kicks off this Friday with a Duck Shoot on a trap field in Dell. Registration begins at 6 p.m.
“The cost is $8 per round and all of the proceeds go to local high school trap shooting teams in Mississippi County,” said owner of M&D Outfitters Danny Quearry.
The following Saturday, Oct. 26,beginning at 10 a.m., will be the Gumbo Contest, an open event that will be held in front of the M&D Outfitters store. Teams will compete for cash prizes and the contest ends at 3 p.m.
Quearry says that this year’s contest has the highest number of gumbo teams participating since the first one in 2017.
“The first year we had eight gumbo teams, the second we had 13, this is the third year and we have 30-plus gumbo teams,” said Quearry. “100 percent of the proceeds of gumbo sales will go to the National Cold War Museum.”
Beginning at 12 p.m. that Saturday will be the Duck Calling contest. Quearry says he is expecting 15 to 20 duck callers to participate.
“Everyone that is competing in the Duck Calling contest is already qualified for the World Competition in Stuttgart, Ark.,” said Quearry.
The Memphis Street Outlaws will have four cars at the event for showing during the gumbo contest and there will be live music from The Shotgun Billy’s from 6p.m. to 8:30p.m., sponsored by Main Street.
Quearry says this event is a big way to kickoff duck hunting season, and that his goals are to bring people to the community.
“This year has been so much easier because there has been so much help behind the scenes. I do this because I just want to bring people from all over here to Northeast Arkansas and show them what the county has to offer,” said Quearry.
