Linda Simpson was honored with a surprise reception at city hall in Lake City on Sunday, Dec. 16.
Simpson has served as Lake City clerk/treasurer for 12 years. She decided not to seek re-election due to health issues.
Simpson spent 25 years in finance working seven years for Lenders Title Company. She was recovering from back surgery when she was asked about accepting an appointment as clerk/treasurer for Lake City. She finished that term and then was elected to the position for two four-year terms.
Simpson was diagnosed two years ago with cancer and has fought back through some trying times with the support of her family and co-workers.
“I feel great now,” she said. “I have to continue on cancer pills for several years. I always gave God the credit for putting me in the right place at the right time to serve as clerk/treasurer. Having cancer has helped me put my priorities in order. I always thought God put me here and He will let me know when it is time to retire. I think He let me know.”
She is very pleased to hand over the position to the newly elected clerk/treasurer, Lisa Sitz.
Connie Collins, water clerk, and Simpson were diagnosed with breast cancer the same day. It was a major concern to them who would take care of the citizens of Lake City. Sitz started working part-time for the city training in both positions.
“Lisa would work for Connie when she had to be out and she worked with me learning the job if I had to be out,” Simpson said.
“Both mayors, former Mayor Billy Anderson and present Mayor Jon Milligan, were excellent to work with. We never had any problems. I have worked longer with Jon, eight years. It has gotten to the point where at times we can read each other's mind. That's scary. I will miss him. The council has also been great. I have been to meetings where cities complain about their council. Our council works together to get the job done and always has the best in mind for the citizens of Lake City. Our employees, including police and firemen, are the best around. I call myself the momma of the city. We have shared problems, laughs, and lots of love for each other. We are a true family. I will certainly miss all of them.
Simpson plans to spend more time with her family. She and her husband, Carroll, have purchased a 27 foot camper and plan to travel with their puppy.
They have 16 grandchildren(five are great-grandchildren) to enjoy.
“I do not have big plans,” Simpson said. “I just want to enjoy life. I am thankful for each day. If I get everything done on my 'to do' list, it will take me several years.”
Mayor Milligan presented her with a plaque in appreciation for her years of service to the citizens of Lake City.
“When I became mayor, she helped me so much,” Mayor Milligan said. “She took care of me and the city. We all appreciate her years of service.”
Simpson has served as treasurer/secretary, vice president and president of the Arkansas City Clerk Recorder Treasurer Association (ACCRTA) through the years.
“I have met many wonderful people through my work with the association.
She plans to attend the International Institute of Municipal Clerks annual meeting in 2020 which will be held in Little Rock.
