The Mississippi County Union Mission was immensely impacted by last week’s thunderstorms. For the first time in its history, The Mission, located at 400 East Walnut, flooded, as some six inches of water made its way into the kitchen, hallways and dormitories Friday morning.

“The church sanctuary, along with the entire premises, was inundated with water,” a press release reads. “There is an 80 percent loss of content in the warehouses where The Mission has helped hundreds of families over the years. Although The Mission does have flood insurance, the deductible might be up to $10,000. We are in desperate need of assistance from the community to keep our doors open during this perilous time.”

The Mission is in need of help for the major cleanup effort. It will have a clean-up party from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday with lunch provided to those who volunteer. For more information contact Willie Williams at 740-8489.

Also, The Mission is asking for financial donations both large and small. It is in the process of setting up a GoFundMe page to collect those donations, which will go towards the deductible so the shelter can resume services as soon as possible. In the meantime, donors may mail checks and money orders to P.O. Box 501, Blytheville, AR, 72315 or contact a board member.

“While all of this is going on, The Mission is housing 20 clients,” the press release reads. “The kitchen is running on a limited capacity. Anyone can sponsor a meal, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Please note, we are not taking any new residents at this time. The Mission is also not accepting clothes or any kind of physical donations (furniture, electronics, etc.) until further notice. The residents and the board of directors appreciate your prayers and any action you can take to support The Mission.”

The board of directors includes president Mary Lee Johnson, vice president Tamika Jenkins, secretary Lula Woodall, treasurer DeCarla Porter, Connie Ash, Lisa Willard and Chris Raymer.

For more information, contact Johnson at 763-8380.
