The thunderstorms rolled into the Blytheville area to end early the AAA Benefit game pitting the Blytheville Chickasaws against the Mountain Home Bombers. However, the game had been decided long before coming to a halt, as the Chicks led 50-7 at the time.
BHS head coach Ben Fisher gave credit to his offensive line, which helped the Chicks gain nearly 500 yards of total offense on the night.
“The O-line, I can’t say enough about them. We’re not as big as we were last year but golly, those guys blocked their tails off tonight. I can’t say enough about them,” Fisher explained. “They played as a unit, and we didn’t do that last year, and that’s what you got to do at the offensive line. I can think of one really bad mistake but other than that I thought they played awesome tonight. Tyler Gant, Tyler Anderson, Quintrel Nance, Xamine Bell and Roderius Adams, can’t say enough about them.”
BHS rushed for a total of 330 yards on the night with junior Jermel Woods racking up three touchdowns on seven carries for 136 yards.
Fisher said, “If all the running backs are having the success that goes back to the offensive line doing their job. It makes it really easy for the running backs to have success. Jermel [Woods], Tyrone [Pope], Brian [Denkins], Zah’tavien [Wright] and Zy’Kerrian Kennedy all ran the ball well tonight.”
One area that Fisher was not pleased with was the kicking game. The Chicks missed six extra points, which Fisher explained would be addressed before the opening game on Aug. 31 against the Osceola Seminoles.
“One glaring thing that was really bad was our kicking game. There wasn’t even a rush and we couldn’t kick an extra point and that will be addressed Monday,” Fisher added. “We’ll come out here and probably spend a 15 minute period, just on kicking game. Probably will do that all week, next week. Because that will get you beat in close games and if you even want to think about getting to playoffs, you’ve got to have special teams. We didn’t get to see the return game, which is one of our strong suits, but as far as kicking game I was not very pleased with it.”
Fisher also added that senior second-year quarterback Jaheim Carter is a different QB than last season and made great decisions against MHHS.
“[Jaheim Carter] made some great decisions tonight. We didn’t have any designed plays to read the end, but he was reading it anyways,” Fisher said. “That’s how much he’s evolved from last year and even earlier this summer. He’s seeing the defense a lot better and as things progress, our next opponent [the Osceola Seminoles] will be a lot faster, so reads are going to be a lot quicker but I thought he did a great job of reading the defense especially in the run game.”
