What is the biggest issue facing the county?

Joe Lewis, Sr.: The biggest issue facing Mississippi County I would say is the Mississippi County Courthouse. Being able to satisfy Mississippi County in the best way possible.

Jo Ann Henton: One of the biggest issues facing the county is associated with employment. Although, we are slowly bringing jobs to the county, we need more. Our county is a prime location for creating jobs because we have access to the Mississippi River, have a major interstate that goes through the county and we have an airport that can be utilized for commercial use.

I would like to see more incentives offered to industries that hire our Mississippi County citizens. This would enhance our economic growth and lower the high unemployment rate. Far too long, many of the industries in the county have said that our citizens are not employable. In my opinion, it is time to stop using that as an excuse. Arkansas Northeastern College has implemented several training programs designed to help the underemployed, as well as those wanting to excel in their career, receive certifications that will help to reduce this problem. Mississippi County was recently recognized for being the first ACT Work Ready Community in Arkansas which is a direct correlation to the strides that our community college and citizens are making toward economic development.

What are your thoughts on the courthouse issue? Please include your position on whether to extend the hospital tax to pay for the project.

Henton: I believe that we do need a new courthouse, but I also believe that our citizens should be allowed to vote and make that decision. Currently, our courthouses have very serious problems and a decision needs to be made before something major happens to them and we are forced to relocate while trying to build another one.

I also believe that it would cost the taxpayers less money if we built a new courthouse while ours are still operational. I would personally vote to extend the hospital tax, however, this is a decision that our voters should be allowed to make.

Lewis: My thoughts on the courthouse would be the goal to move Mississippi County into the new technology advantages available in order for the courthouse to operate in a fast, safe and accurate way. If it is necessary to extend the hospital tax for a period of time for growth of Mississippi County. I would be in agreement unless we can find another way to fund the project.

Why are you the best choice for justice of the peace?

Lewis: I am the best choice for Mississippi County Quorum Court #7, because I am definitely concerned for the people in Mississippi County. I love working with a group of people for a great cause and growth. With having a common goal which is developing and making Mississippi County be the best.

I have over eighteen years experience and understand how the board operates. I have worked with most of the Justices and look forward to knowing the others better. Excited about going places and meeting new people.

Henton: I am the best choice for justice of the peace for District 7 because my belief in fairness, honesty and integrity are essential principles that will help me to relate effectively to the community and sense the needs and feelings of others and make them feel that they are a contributing part of the whole picture especially in the field of community involvement.

I am a person of moral principle, competent and anxious to help bring about positive approaches to community relations.

By serving on the Quorum Court for the past two years, I have gained valuable knowledge in the areas of long range planning, communications and budgeting. Each one of thse skills will enable me to make decisions that can be cost efficient for the taxpayers.

What actions would you take to improve the county?

Henton: I would make a conscious effort to work with all elected officials regardless of our differences.

My common goal is to make Mississippi County better. Our future lies in the ability to work together. I believe Mississippi County has made progress but once we begin to look past our differences in reaching a common goal, we will see growth and development like we’ve never seen before.

Lewis: The actions I would take to improve the county is to work with the Quorum Court and the committees I am assigned to. To respect and consider the thoughts of the citizens of Mississippi County. Be honest and true to the position I am working for the people of Mississippi County.
