Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson is expected to be in town on Thursday as Nucor Steel-Arkansas holds a ribbon-cutting ceremony on a new $230 million specialty cold mill.

Lt. Governor Tim Griffin and other state and local leaders are expected to be on hand as well to celebrate the event with Nucor leadership and teammates.

This investment, first announced in September 2017, demonstrates Nucor Corporation’s ongoing and long-term commitment to the Northeast Arkansas and its teammates, according to a press release from the company. The new cold mill complex will expand Nucor’s capacity for automotive grade steel, namely advanced high-strength, high-strength low-alloy and motor lamination steel products. The expansion is expected to add approximately 100 jobs at an estimated average annual salary of $80,000.

“As a world leader in steel manufacturing technology, Nucor is particularly focused on increasing productivity and efficiency, and competing in global steel production,” the release reads. “As today’s automakers count on steel as their choice to reduce vehicle weight, while at the same time improving both safety and performance, our new cold mill will be at the forefront of making these advanced high strength steel products.”

Nucor Steel – Arkansas is one of Nucor’s five sheet steel mills. Opened in 1992, the facility employs over 650 teammates and has the capacity to produce 2.8 million tons of flat-rolled steel each year. Along with its Nucor-Yamato beam mill, Castrip Arkansas and Skyline Steel, the company spent 30 years investing in Arkansas.  Since 1987, Nucor has invested nearly $2.5 Billion in Northeast Arkansas. The company employs nearly 1,800 teammates statewide.
