Rebels surge past Mustangs 74-54

Riverside completed a season sweep over archrival Buffalo Island Central, defeating the Mustangs 74-54 Tuesday night at Monette.

Riverside claimed a 19-14 advantage after the first quarter and kept their lead throughout the second stanza before taking a 32-29 edge into the dressing room at intermission.

The Rebels scored the first four points of the third period on back to back buckets by senior guards Gavin Stone and Braden Overman to increase their margin to 36-29. But BIC's Trey DePriest caught fire from the field, pumping in seven consecutive points to knot the game at 36-all at the 5:11 mark.

Riverside went back on top on a Dylan Austin three pointer, and clung to a slim 43-42 lead with 1:36 left in the quarter after a Cory Turner bucket for the Mustangs.

Austin answered by banking in an improbable three pointer from the right corner to push the Rebel lead to four. Austin canned another trey on Riverside's next possession and the Rebels added to their lead when Chris Sain came away with a steal and a lay-in. Stone capped off a 10-0 Rebel run with a steal of his own and a drive to the hole, giving Riverside a 53-42 advantage entering the final frame.

Sain dropped in a triple to begin the fourth quarter for the Rebels, and after a Stone steal and lay-up, Riverside owned a 60-44 lead with 5:26 left in the game. The Rebels were never threatened the rest of the way.

"I thought our kids played really hard tonight," said elated Rebel Head Coach Buster Campbell. "Chris Sain and Braden Overman had big games for us. We are getting better every game, but we still have a way to go. Dylan Austin hit a couple of big threes that started the flurry for us toward the end of the third quarter. Our kids really wanted this game tonight."

Riverside put four players in double figures, led by Stone's game high 22 points and five steals. Sain completed a double-double, scoring 16 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Austin drained four three pointers and finished with 14 points while Overman cranked out a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Jon Milligan had eight points while Landon Moyer and Brody Davis added two points apiece. The Rebels hit seven of 11 foul shots and canned seven treys.

DePriest and Andrew McFarlin paced the Mustangs with 16 points apiece. Chayse Carmichael and Blaine Wildy tallied four points each, Tyler Gipson, Canon Walling, Myles Gifford and Dax Hurst all scored three points each. Cory Turner added two points. BIC made four of five foul shots and nailed six treys.

In junior high action, BIC slipped past Riverside 27-24. The Rebels led 6-0 after the first quarter before BIC rallied to take a 13-11 edge at the half. The Mustangs pulled ahead 25-16 after three periods of play and held on in the final frame to take the win.

Tate Schooley led BIC with 10 points. John Garrett Edwards scored six while Jesse Fry and Drake Mitchell chipped in four points apiece. Juan Gomez added three points.

D.J. and Demo Bowers led the Rebels with eight points apiece. Ryan Austin contributed five points while Jacob Thomas pitched in three.

Riverside vs. Bay

Riverside closed the week to improve to 8-2 on the season with a 61-52 victory over Bay Friday night at Lake City. The Rebels trailed the Yellowjackets 12-8 after the first period but fought back to take a 20-17 edge at the half. Riverside increased their margin to 38-28 after three quarters.

Sain scored 17 of the Rebel's first 20 points and finished off his big night scoring 21 while grabbing 16 rebounds. Stone netted 17, Austin tallied 12 points, eight assists and five steals and was a perfect 6-6 from the foul line in the fourth quarter. Milligan netted seven while Overman had four points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Riverside connected on 23-29 free throws and dropped in four treys.

Taylor Layne paced Bay with 19 points while Dustin Utley added 13. The 'Jackets made three of five foul shots and drained nine three pointers.

In junior high action, Bay defeated Riverside 35-22. Braison Morris led the Yellowjackets with 11 points.

Gage Crews paced the Rebels with seven points. Austin had five, Thomas scored three while Demo Bowers, Ethan Boatman and Grayson Emery all added two points each. D.J. Bowers contributed one point.

BIC vs. Marmaduke

BIC (2-3) celebrated Homecoming Friday night at the MAC with a resounding 56-23 win over Marmaduke. DePriest led the Mustangs with 19 points, McFarlin scored 13 while Gifford added 12. Turner pulled down six boards for BIC.

BIC led 18-5 after the first quarter, 31-10 at the half and 48-16 entering the final frame.

In junior high action, Fry scored 12 points to lead the Mustangs to a 42-23 victory over the Greyhounds.

BIC returns to action Monday night, playing host to Piggott before entertaining Manila Tuesday night at Monette.
