The Blytheville Fire Department would like to stress the seriousness of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Because of the high temperatures and humidity everyone needs to be aware of some of the signs and symptoms of heat related illnesses.
Heat exhaustion can best be described by feelings of faintness or dizziness, as well as vomiting, nausea, heavy sweating, muscle cramps, headache, weakness, fatigue, fast heartbeat and redness of the face.
If you begin experiencing these signs or symptoms, you should get out of the heat and into a cool place.
Immediately begin replenishing fluids such as water or sports drinks. It is recommended to avoid drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine. Remove wet clothing and use a fan or take cool showers to help reduce your body temperature. If your body temperature remains high or symptoms continue seek medical attention.
Heat stroke can best be described by a throbbing headache, dizziness or light headiness, lack of sweating despite the heat, red, hot or dry skin, muscle weakness or cramps, fast heart rate, shallow breathing, confusion or unconsciousness.
Heat stroke is a very serous medical problem and needs immediate medical attention.
If you begin experiencing these symptoms or a co worker informs you that they are having any of these problems, seek medical attention right away.
Please keep your health and safety in mind while in this hot and humid weather, keeping in mind that light colors, and breathable clothing aids in helping to keep you cool.
