Every athlete dreams of growing up and taking gold in the Olympics, but for some Olympians I'm starting to wonder if they want to win gold or hold every record possible. Some records will not be touched anytime soon.
Katie Ledecky, a USA women's swimmer, now holds many world records and some of the records she broke were her own. On Sunday, Ledecky swam the 400 m freestyle in 3:56.46, which she broke her previous best, 3:58.37, from Aug. 23, 2014 in the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Gold Coast, Australia. She has already won silver in 4x100 meter freestyle with the women's USA swim team and took gold in the 400 m freestyle, where her closest competitor was about 5 seconds behind her. On Tuesday night, she was to swim in the Women's 200m freestyle to look for another gold medal and on Thursday she will compete in the Women's 800m freestyle.
Michael Phelps is known as the most decorated Olympian of all time. He has 23 medals as of today and still has the chance to win a few more before he hangs it up for what he says is his last. He won his first gold medal of this Olympics in the Men's 4x100m freestyle relay. Out of 23 medals Phelps has a total of 19 gold. In the 200m butterfly, he became the first swimmer to make five finals in the same event. On Tuesday night he was to compete in the Men's 200m butterfly event, On Wednesday, he will compete in the Men's 200m individual medley, and on Thursday, he will be competing in the heat for the Men's 100m butterfly.
The USA Women's basketball team is filled with WNBA stars: Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, and Tamika Catchings.
In the first game the women's team played against Senegal, and won,121-56, breaking three U.S Olympic Women Basketball Team records: most points(121), won by most points (65), and they dished out the most assists ever with 36. In their second match of the Olympics they beat Spain, 103-63. Their next game will be against Serbia on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
The men's basketball team is on much of the same pace as the women's team, as the men cruised to a 119-62 win over China in game one in Rio and a 113-69 win over Venezuela in game two in Rio. Their next game will be played at 5 p.m on Wednesday against Australia, then again on Friday, also at 5 p.m., against Serbia.
The US men's team (David Boudia and Steele Johnson) took silver in Synchronized 10m Platform Diving. Conor Dwyer took bronze for the US Men's 200 Freestyle.
Ryan Murphy took gold in the Men's 100m Backstroke, also David Plumee took bronze in the event. Kathleen Baker, U.S. Swimmer, took Silver in the Women's 100m Backstroke. Lillia King took gold and Catherine Meili took Bronze in the Women's 100m Breaststroke.
As of Tuesday by noon, the United States leads all countries with 19 medals. The closest country with the most medals are China with 13. U.S.A and China are also tied with the most gold medals in the Olympics with five.
