A 5-year-old boy was struck by a car at 10th and Dixie Friday and taken a day later to Great River Medical Center, where doctors treated a large abrasion on his torso and his sprained left wrist.

Now his mother, who was at the nail salon at the time, is being investigated for endangering the welfare of a minor, according to a report from the Blytheville Police Department.

The report said around 5 p.m. Friday, the mother left the victim and two other siblings with her 13-year-old son, while going to "the nail shop so she could have her feet done," the report said.

The mother took her one-year-old child with her. Before leaving, she told police, that she did a head count of her children and noticed two of them, including the accident victim, were not there.

"She and (the boyfriend) went around by Hay's Grocery store to look for him," the report said. "When they didn't see him in the area, they continued to go to the nail shop for her appointment. While they were gone, the juvenile victim tried to cross 10th on Dixie and was struck by a vehicle."

The 13-year-old brother told officers that the boy looked one way, but did not look towards the vehicle that struck him.

"The person driving the vehicle asked one of the children to call the juvenile victim's mother, but neither (the mother or boyfriend) went to speak with her in person when it happened," the report said. "The child was not immediately taken to the hospital or checked on by any type of medical professional."

The report said the next day, Saturday, the child woke up with a swollen left hand that was hurting, and the boyfriend took him to Great River Medical Center for treatment.

The hospital staff called police, while treating the boy for the large abrasion and injured wrist, the report said.

Authorities notified the child abuse hotline as well.
