Manila freshman Brock Birmingham fired an 82 to capture medalist honors Monday afternoon at the 3A-3 District Golf Tournament in Batesville. Playing on the tough Eagle Mountain Golf Course, Birmingham joined sophomore Joel Burrow as qualifiers for the state tournament Oct. 6, also in Batesville.

The Lions finished third as a team with a 286 total, 21 strokes behind district champion Cedar Ridge. Corning finished second with a 278 team score.

Burrow finished his day with a 91 while Justin Bratton completed his round at 113. Birch Milano also competed and shot a 116 for the Lions.

"It's a big deal for a freshman to win district medalist honors," said Lion Coach John Deaton. "Brock really played well on a tough golf course. We are proud to be sending two players to the state tournament. I thought our team competed hard, coming away with a third place finish."

Lady Lion Allie Edwards fired a nine-hole score of 78 to also qualify for state tournament play.
