A back-to-school tradition 28 years in the making happens next month. 'Kids Day' started out as a simple barbecue with Shannon "Duck" Sims and friends who invited some kids over to have a bite to eat. From then on, the program has grown.
Ever since the first 'Kids Day' in 1986, the annual event has become a place for children of all ages to participate in games such as a 100 yard dash, egg toss, and questionnaire, with prizes, food and plenty of entertainment for the whole family.
Since the first 'Kids Day', more and more local residents of Blytheville including various churches, businesses and merchants have all offered donations to sponsor the event. Former Blytheville residents also contribute, some who live in California, Michigan, and Georgia.
Aside from family fun, the event helps to provide school supplies to children in the community. In addition to the various games, there will be a variety of people attending to speak to children about life lessons.
"Every generation has different hardships," said Sims. "For this one, it's the lack of self respect. That's why we have people here to help them learn manners, and help them learn to respect other. In order to learn to respect yourself, you need to respect others."
On August 1, 2015 the 28th annual "Kid's Day" event will take place In Williams Park from 1pm to 5pm. Activities at the event include various games, prizes, food and fun for the entire family. If you have any questions or would like to make a donation, contact Sims at (870)-623-3179.
