If you want to feel community pride, take a walk down Main Street this weekend.

Music on Main kicked off Mayfest Friday night and, so long as the weather cooperates, there will be a nice crowd downtown today for the annual festival.

Mayfest offers a chance to catch up with old friends; indulge on foods of all kinds; check out some interesting breeds in the dog show; listen to some good music; and watch the little ones have a blast on the children's block.

There are activities for all ages and all interests, which is what keeps folks coming back year in and year out.

It's great to see downtown packed with people enjoying themselves. It doesn't get much better than conversing with friends, while munching on funnel cakes and fried Oreos.

This year's theme is "The '70s" -- celebrating the 1970s in the Delta, which should produce some interesting booths.

There is a showmanship competition with judges considering costumes, crowd interaction, relativity to the theme and overall booth decorations/appearance.

Usually, there are a few creative vendors who go the extra mile with their booths.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with this year.

The Courier News will have an informational booth. We'll have some freebies and a drawing every hour for a subscription to the CN.

All you have to do is fill out a free ticket and you'll be entered into the contest. The lucky winners will enjoy three months of the Courier News on us.

It's our way of saying thanks for continuing to support your hometown newspaper.

There's no way to adequately thank the ladies in my life this Mother's Day. But I'll give it a shot on Sunday.

My wife, Kristy, is a great mother to our children and I'm fortunate to have Elaine Kennedy as my mother-in-law.

Last but certainly not least, I couldn't ask for a better mother than mom has been my nearly 38 years on this earth.

She deserves an award for putting up with me all that time. Mom has been there for me through thick and thin, good times and bad.

Happy Mother's Day to all moms out there. Enjoy your special day.
