GOSNELL -- The Gosnell Lady Pirates split a 3-4A conference double-header against Cave City Tuesday. The Lady Pirates won game one, 8-2, but fell in the nightcap, 9-8.
With the help of a five-run fourth inning, the Gosnell Lady Pirates defeated Cave City, 8-2, in game one of Tuesday's double-header.
The Lady Pirates picked up a run in the third and then broke the game open with five runs on five hits highlighted by Brista Hinklin's double in the fourth and then two more insurance runs in the second inning.
Lady Pirate pitcher Ciara Watson pitched four and a third innings of no-hit ball before Cave City picked up a run on two hits in the fifth and then one more run in the top of the seventh.
Watson allowed just one earned run on five hits while striking out three in seven complete innings of work.
Hinklin, Watson, Emma Weeks (2-3, run scored and an RBI), Z'Kiah Kuykendal (2-4 with 2 runs scored) Jackie Brees, Macie Cain (2-4, run scored and an RBI) and Carrington Tubbs led the offense for the Lady Pirates.
Down 5-0 for much of the game, Cave City came back to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the seventh inning. The Cavewomen plated two runs in the inning and held on for a 9-8 win over Gosnell in the final game of the night.
Gosnell scored four runs in the first inning and a run in the second inning to build a 5-0 advantage.
Cave City finally got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth. Gosnell tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a solo home run from Brista Hinklin to lead off the inning, and then managed just one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Hinklin, Macie Cain (triple) and Alexis Mitchell recorded hits for the Lady Pirates in game two.
Gosnell (5-9 overall, 2-6 3-4A) is scheduled to travel to Manila Thursday to take on the Lady Lions.
