Saluting the firefighters
To the editor:
Firefighters: Have you ever wondered who they are, why they became one and what motivates them?
I had the opportunity of being a member of a volunteer fire department. I now have a grandson who enjoys the same work. They are men and women of all walks of life. They enjoy excitement, coping with fear and get a tremendous enjoyment while serving in the community.
During the flood of 1955 in New England, I was part of and witnessed the devastation fires can result in. Destruction of property, injuries and yes, even death. There were moments of great anxiety and compassion, but always a feeling of accomplishing something for humanity. The burning in your lungs for air in a smoke-filled room is something you don't forget, but the total experience of saving lives is something you always remember.
My hat is off and I salute all of you who donate your time and efforts to such a noble cause.
