That Bookstore in Blytheville owner Chris Crawley and writer/editor Jeanne Mason have partnered together to form the TBIB Writers' Group, which they hope will draw passionate and skilled writers together to ultimately celebrate the art of writing.
Writers' groups can be a major tool in helping writers, according to Crawley, who said groups can provide the necessary feedback, encouragement and inspiration to help writers find and develop "their writing voice."
"Being a part of a group increases a writer's motivation and discipline and gives them something to work toward each week," Crawley said. This is the driving idea behind the writers' group -- pushing writers to become better by adding the accountability that comes with being a part of a group.
The way the group will work is writers will gather together each week to read excerpts from their writing, then the group will offer feedback through comments and notes for each piece read. This format is simple, but effective, according to Mason, who said this keeps participants engaged in the writing process.
Although the two have a list of ideas and a vision for what they would like to see the group become, Mason, a Boston-area native, said she and Crawley are focusing on creating a strong foundation for now that can be built upon as the group grows.
"Before we start focusing on different groups or levels (for writers), we first want to build this group and really create an interest for the group so we have a good number of writers and it's worth it for people to come out every week," Mason said.
Crawley said he's excited about what this group can be, not only for writers, but for the city itself. A firm believer that "Blytheville is getting better," Crawley said this is just another way to shine light on the immense talents in Blytheville and the surrounding areas and the good things that are happening in Mississippi County.
The TBIB Writers' Group will hold it first meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, April 6. Anyone interested in being a part of the group can send a sample fiction or non-fiction writing of 500 words or less to tbiblytheville@gmail.com by March 28. For more information, contact Chris Crawley at 870-763-3333.
