Tax back resolutions were passed for three companies by the Quorum Court's Planning and Development committee Wednesday: Mid River Terminal, Consolidated Grain and Barge and Five Star Hydraulics Inc.

Committee Chairman Justice Bill Nelson objected to the move, saying he would prefer to have more information about the companies and their operational details before the county granted them the right to not pay taxes.

Justices Sylvester Belcher and Michael White voted in favor of the measure, however, leaving Nelson in the minority.

Another company new to the area, RAD Trucking, which is already in operation with around 40 employees, has requested an economic development contract with the county. Economic Developer Clif Chitwood said RAD was requesting $150,000 in exchange for 15 jobs, and added that he had been told by the state that RAD was a viable project. The county would provide $4,000 a month in rental costs until the contract is met.

Nelson again spoke up, saying that the county doesn't have the money to fund the project, but White said he felt funds were available to help. White and Belcher again voted for the project, with Nelson voicing a "no." Nelson added that he wants it noted that the economic development account holds $2 million and currently owes $5 million in promised contracts.
