The Haven of Northeast Arkansas is getting ready for its inaugural 5K Run/Walk, which is being held in tandem with the Chili Cookoff on Oct. 18.
The organization's director, Angela Copper, said the race is a great way to raise awareness for The Haven.
In years past the United Way has hosted a 5K run/walk at the Youth Sportsplex on the same day as the Chili Cookoff, but this year, with The Haven taking charge of the 5K, organizers are looking to make it a bigger part of the Chili Cookoff.
The Haven 5K Run/Walk Against Domestic Violence will start and end at the Greyhound Bus Station on Main Street. Cooper said she feels this is a good way to make the 5K a more cohesive part of the Chili Cookoff.
"This is our first year doing it, so we wanted to make it feel like a part of the Chili Cookoff," she said. "I think this is a great way to put ourselves out there as The Haven and really help with the Chili Cookoff."
The run/walk will be used as a fundraiser to bring greater awareness to The Haven and how it serves the community.
The deadline to register is Oct. 1, if the runner wants a t-shirt, or Oct. 17, if they do not want a shirt. For more information or to sign up, visit www.thehavenofneainc.org or www.racesonline.com, or call 870-532-6669.
