As a thank you for its help during April's barge-sinking incident, and to assist with future rescue operations, Kinder Morgan has gifted the Blytheville Emergency Squad with new cold water survival gear.
The Squad received six Mustang dry suits, which would suit them for any search and rescue operations in the Mississippi or any other body of water at low temperatures or high turbulence.
During the search for the barge, called CMT 123, Emergency Squad personnel were advised not to go into the water because they lacked the proper equipment to deal with the low temperatures and rough conditions.
The search for the two men who went into the river when the barge sank, according to U.S. Coast Guard in attendance at the presentation, was the largest search and rescue operation to take place on the Mississippi River in modern history.
Scott Shirk, general manager for Kinder Morgan, said the company wished to thank the volunteers for their help in searching for the two lost individuals, and that they hope the suits will also be helpful in future operations.
