The Blytheville Chickasaws led Forrest City, 4-2, heading into the top of the seventh and were three outs away from their first 5A-East win since 2010. However, the Mustangs had other plans and plated three runs in the seventh and held on for a 5-4 win in game one of a 5A-East doubleheader Tuesday night at the Blytheville Youth Sportsplex.
Meanwhile, the Blytheville Lady Chickasaws lost 17-0 and 22-0 to Forrest City in softball.
Blytheville threatened to extend the game in the bottom of the seventh. Jamal Washington reached second base with one out on a fielding error in left field. He advanced to third on a sacrifice fly from D'Arik Haley but was stranded at third to end the game.
Forrest City scored a run in the first before the Chicks took the lead with two in the second. The Mustangs tied the game with a run in the sixth but the Chicks bounced back with two in the home half of the inning.
In an odd twist, the game was played under protest with Forrest City questioning the baseballs used during play.
For the game, Washington was the pitcher of record for the Chicks giving up two earned runs on three hits over six innings of work.
Washington, Dustin Foster (double), D'Carlos Rainey, Chase Turner and Alex Draughn picked up hits for the Chickasaws.
Blytheville dropped game two of the doubleheader, 12-1, to the Mustangs.
The Chicks head to Three Rivers Community College, Mo. Friday night to take on South Pemiscott, Mo.
