The 2013 Veterans Day ceremony at the Mississippi County Courthouse in Blytheville started off with a new tradition, only beginning this year. County Veterans Affairs Director Michael Freleigh presented the first-ever Mississippi County Veteran of the Year award to Sgt. Frank R. Anderson.
Anderson, 99, resides in Blytheville and served in World War II, then as a delegate of the American Red Cross in Paris following the war. When the infamous war crimes trials were held at Nurembourg, Anderson attended as a Red Cross delegate.
Freleigh added that anyone who wishes to nominate a friend or family member for next year's award may contact the Veterans Affairs office for more information.
The ceremony also included an address and music from Pathway Church of God Pastor Danny Rigney, as well as the traditional releasing of the doves, taps and honor guard salute.
