The faculty of the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences at Arkansas State University presented Melanie Edens with the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Mrs. Edens is a 1999 graduate with an Associate Degree in Radiography. She went on to become nationally registered in both radiography and computed tomography. She began her career at the Methodist Hospital in 1998 while still a student, and has been there ever since. Since becoming director of radiology 11 years ago, she has become a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Mrs. Edens' supervisor and employees both sing her praises. Scott Childers, assistant administrator of Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro, says she is very determined, dedicated and hardworking. She believes in her staff and treats them as extended family, not just as employees. Mr. Childers said her fingerprints are all over the radiology department at the new hospital, as well as other areas, particularly when it comes to functional patient flow. "She is innovative, creative and a real asset."
In letters of support, Mr. Childers and Dr. John Phillips, chief radiologist for several years at the Baptist Hospital, said they had never seen a better department director. "She has phenomenal people skills and can juggle 10 problems at once. Mrs. Edens serves as a role model for others, and is a wonderful ambassador for her department and for the hospital."
Andrea Simpson, operations manager of radiology said, "I have learned the characteristics of what it takes to be a great leader and lead a team that is efficient and successful."
In the Jonesboro community, Mrs.Edens has been busy. She has previously volunteered with the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the Salvation Army. She currently serves on the Environmental Committee for the Jonesboro Chamber of Commerce.
Mrs. Edens is married to Matt Edens of Jonesboro and they have two young sons, Eli, 3, and Novak, 18 months. They are active members of the Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro.
