The Blytheville Fire Department played defense Wednesday as a vacant house at 1925 Sycamore St. burned.

Fire Chief Mike Carney said firemen got the call Wednesday afternoon and, after determining that the house was vacant, they decided to let it burn in a controlled environment, as opposed to putting firefighters in danger trying to oust the burning building.

"Instead of risking any of our guys' lives we're just going to sit back a play defense," Carney said. "The house was vacant so it's just better to keep it under control."

At the time the exact cause of the fire is unknown.
