16-year-old Billy Davis, of Luxora, drowned Friday evening, according to the Luxora Police Department.
Luxora police responded to a call in reference to people having trouble swimming around 6 p.m. Friday and made contact with Davis' younger brother, who told them his brother and aunt had trouble swimming.
Albert Wright, LPD chief, said Davis -- who couldn't be seen when officers first arrived -- and a group of others were swimming in a chute off Lake Newark when he apparently hit a high current and wasn't able to escape it.
The Blytheville Emergency Squad was called out to search the lake, as well as Luxora First Responders and the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department, and the teen's body was found around 8:30 p.m.
Wright said the area is known to have dangerous currents, and is actually off limits to swimmers.
