Gong Show benefits Relay for Life

The Island Girls hosted the second annual Relay for Life Gong Show on Friday, May 3, at the Melody Theater in Leachville.

Judges included "Carol Burnett," "Cleopatra," and "Fannie Whistle Britches."

Emcee was Jackie Wallis who kept the show lively with his various costumes and wit. Also, assisting with the emcee job was Dale Blaylock offering his country humor.

Comedy and talent joined together making one successful variety show. All proceeds went to the Buffalo Island Relay for Life American Cancer Society.

Acts included the Soggy Bottom Boys; Teyha Simpson singing "Hero"; The ShangraLittles performing "Leader of the Pack"; Judy Hampton singing "How Great Thou Art"; The Village People performing "YMCA" taken over by the Vintage People performing "AARP"; Legits performing "Coke, Fry, and Hamburger"; Ashlyn Cook sang "Fight On"; The Road Hog performed an original tune; Cletus Take the Reel was performed by Tim (Shelby Simpson) and Cletus (Sunny Winstead); Lauren Decker sang a gospel song, performed a dance routine and sang a duet with Haley Navarro; Minnie Pearl; Edith Ann (Judy Hampton) sang "Rock a Bye Baby" and Katherine Clowers performed "Harper Valley PTA."

The cancer survivors were recognized.

"We appreciate everyone who volunteered their time and talent for the show," Emcee Wallis said. "We do this to fight cancer. Relays and fundraisers are done so someday we can live in a cancer free world. It doesn't take people doing a lot, it takes a lot of people doing a little to make it count."

He invited all of the cancer survivors and their families to the survivor social at 2 p.m. June 9 at the Leachville Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

He also reminded everyone of the $5 luminaries for sale. These are used to light the walkway the night of the relay. They are bought in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of those who have lost their battle to cancer.

The 2013 Relay for Life will be held beginning at 6 p.m. June 14 at the Leachville City Park. Cancer survivors will take the first victory lap. There will be food booths, games, silent auction and much more throughout the night.
