Source Gas Arkansas is on schedule for its proactive gas line replacement project in parts of northeast Arkansas, including here in Blytheville.
Rich Davis, manager of business and government affairs for Source Gas Arkansas, said Source Gas is looking to phase out the old cast iron gas lines across the country, including here in Blytheville. Davis said as the ground shifts over time, it can cause cracks and weak spots in the iron pipes which could lead to gas leaks. The rigid cast iron pipes currently being used in many parts of the country are being replaced with more malleable plastic lines that are considered much safer.
According to Davis, Source Gas has been proactive in making these changes, which are not required from the company.
"Safety is our top concern, so we decided to do this on our own," said Davis.
The $1.7-million dollar project taking place in northeast Arkansas is right on track according to Davis, with a projected completion date being before the end of spring. The transition has been smooth in Blytheville, Davis said, due in large part to how flat the city's layout is. This has made it possible for Source Gas to drill horizontally in many areas, preventing crews from having to dig up entire streets and intersections.
Source Gas is working in Blytheville, Osceola and Piggot and is expecting to be finished by late April or early May.
