Caraway voters passed a one-cent sales city tax proposal by a vote of 119-34 Tuesday, Dec. 13.

"I am so proud of our Caraway residents," Mayor Barry Riley said. "This shows they are supportive of the vision the mayor and council has for the city. Now we will be able to stabilize our general fund and finalize our 2012 budget. We plan to hire a third police officer, in order to provide necessary security for our townspeople and businesses. Now we will be able to apply for state and federal funding to make needed improvements and look to the future for the betterment of our city."

A special council meeting has been called for Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 6 p.m. at city hall to discuss hiring a new police officer and setting a salary.
