BKC teachers throughout the school year have used thematic units developed for Common Core standards throughout the curriculum, with the current unit focusing on exploring with friends in the neighborhood.

The focus was on families at the beginning of the unit, and then the students were read numerous information books about community helpers.

As an enrichment activity, the local community helpers were invited to visit the classrooms and discuss their jobs.

Other community helpers have included Judge Shannon Langston, firefighter Joey Manrique and veterinarian Dr. B.R. Cato.
