Letter to the Editor

Office-holders answer to citizens, not to Republican Party

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

To the editor:

This is my answer to a letter to the editor from the Republican Party of Arkansas. They requested from Democrat State Rep. Tommy L. Baker and Democrat Sen. David Burnett, their position on President Obama's health care law. The Arkansas GOP stated that they can't get a straight answer from the Democratic Party of Arkansas on the president's health care law.

This is my position on the issue. The Democratic Party of Arkansas, and the Democratic representatives of Arkansas, only need to explain their positions on an issue to the citizens of Arkansas, and not to the Republican Party of Arkansas. In Arkansas, we have a two-party system, and both operate independently from each other. Arkansas got the cold feet when the GOP of Arkansas expressed opposition to the $3.8 million grant for health insurance exchange. They sided with the Republicans, and declined the grant. Well, well, well.

The GOP also claimed that the Democrats are running from the failed economic policies of Obama. Please let me set the record straight. Seventy-five percent of Americans blamed Bush for the mess that we are in. It was his failed policies that caused the mess, and the Republicans want Obama to spin us out of this mess without the help of the Republicans.

Arkansas Republican U.S. Sen. John Boozman and the Republican Congress killed the president's jobs bills that would have put millions back to work. Here again, the Republicans want to close many post offices throughout the country that would put more than 100,000 out of work and make it harder for people to have access to the Postal Service. I want you to know that the job bill is not a Democratic job bill, it's a job bill for all Americans who are out of work. The Republican's current political strategy is to block anything that could improve the economy, that might boost the president's standing. They will see, this will backfire.

The Republican Party of Arkansas are saying how bad Obama's health care plan is. Well, they killed the better plan. I agree with the Republicans, the plan that we have is not the better plan. Like I stated, the GOP killed the better plan. What do they want? Oh, yes. They want to replace Obamacare with the Republican Ryan's health care plan that all the Republicans voted for.

Just in case you did not know it, let me explain just one of the provisions in the Republican's health care Plan. The Medicare program would undergo a major overhaul. Senior citizens would have to shop for coverage on the insurance exchange, set up by their state, but instead of the federal government paying for every service as it currently does, each Medicare beneficiary would be allotted, meaning given, a certain amount of money based on their income. The Republican health care plan is a voucher program, where Grandma would have to go and shop for the right insurance with her voucher. The Republicans claimed that the Democrats are running from Obamacare. Well, let's see, will Sen. John Boozman and Rep. Rick Crawford run from the Ryan's Health care plan, the same plan that they voted for?

There is one thing that I would like to say to all who are planning to run on the Democratic ticket. Stop being afraid and ashamed of being a Democrat. This is the party that is responsible for women's rights, women's voting rights, women's equal pay rights, civil rights, Social Security, medicare, worker's rights and the Child Labor Act, etc. ... All Democrats should be proud to stand up and put their record against the Republicans' record any day! So Democrats, stop running from your achievements. Let the citizens of Arkansas know that the Democratic Party is the party for the people, and has the record proving it. Grab hold of it. Love it. Don't let go of it.
