DYESS -- Country music legend and Dyess native Gene Williams has resigned his elected position on the Dyess City Council.
In a letter to Mayor Larry Sims, Williams said, "I, Gene Williams, respectfully resign from my position on the Dyess City Council.
"I have thought this decision over carefully and cautiously, with all matters considered, I feel this is in my best interest.
"I have been a contributer both financially and physically for the Dyess community for years and believe that my exhausted efforts to improve Dyess and operate in the standards of good moral standing have been ignored.
"I cannot continue to stand by and be part of these activities. Therefore, at this time, I feel my time and efforts could be better utilized focusing on more positive endeavors."
Williams told The Osceola Times Tuesday night Dyess is his hometown and he is proud of it.
"I am going to keep doing things to help the town, but I don't want anything to do with city government," he said.
Williams made an unsuccessful bid for mayor of the colony last year.
