Thanks to a program sponsored by the Blytheville Fire Department and the Mississippi County Economic Opportunities Commission, free home smoke detectors are available for those who need them.

"We offer this every year for anyone who may have difficulty in purchasing a smoke detector for their home, or who may be unable to install one for themselves," said Fire Chief Mike Carney. "We've been offering this program for the last 10 or 15 years as part of our fire prevention program, but for the last two, Mr. Scruggs and the EOC have really helped us out with providing the detectors."

Firemen are also available to install the detectors in the homes of those who may be physically unable to do so. Anyone wishing to pick up a free smoke detector, for residential home use only, should contact the Blytheville Fire Department at 870-762-0468 or stop by the main fire station at Main and Franklin.
