Letter to the Editor

Driving while intoxicated is never OK

Thursday, April 7, 2011

To the editor:

I find myself compelled to write another letter to the editor after reading a story of how one attorney sees that breaking the law by driving over the legal limit is OK:

1. As long as you can come up with a story or belief that the officer, that made the arrest, had no reason to stop a drunk driver in the first place or;

2. You have a position that pays so well you could pay any fine that you might be given. I mean, after all, this person is paid by the taxpayers of Mississippi County, so in a sense, we'll pay the court cost, attorney fees and fines for you. Just put it on your tab for ya, how's that?

I wonder how this attorney would represent someone that had the same amount of alcohol in their system and had caused a wreck and injured someone else or a loved one from his own family?

I would bet to say that this is not the first time this person has operated a motor vehicle in this condition, nor will it be their last. The problem is he got caught, plain and simple, and his attorney is planning to discredit an officer of the law in the name of saving face of his client. I'm ashamed we have an attorney in town that would stoop to that level.

I have to ask myself, what kind of morals does the county judge look for when he hires a company to run his multi-million dollar taxpayer hospital system?

It wasn't that long ago when there was the speech that the county judge gave at several gatherings that talked about "action people". Well it's time you took some action Judge Carney! You talk about how six people lost their position when you came into office, how there's no work ethic in today's worker here in the county so you had to bring people out of retirement, threaten jobs of other elected officials and put your stamp of approval on it, all in the name of friendship. After all, you've made no one mad by these actions.

Judge, we need some action. We need you to step up to the plate and practice what you've been preaching. We need you to fix the hospital situation that you ran your campaign on. We need people with higher morals running the hospital system, not people that will discredit our police officers because they got caught breaking the law!
