A Luxora woman is dead after her husband accidentally drove their vehicle too close to high water behind the levee near Luxora Sunday afternoon, according to a report from the Mississippi County Sheriff's Office.
Billy Victory, 81, and his wife, Mary Sue, 77, both of East State Highway 158 in Luxora, were driving through the flooded area in a 1998 Toyota pickup truck at around 3 p.m. Sunday. Mr. Victory told officers that he had turned around preparing to leave when the truck slid into the current, causing the cab of the truck to fill with water.
When officers arrived, Mr. Victory was attempting to get out of the vehicle and was assisted by officers. Mrs. Victory was still belted into the front seat. Attempts to revive Mrs. Victory were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Mississippi County Coroner Mike Godsey.
When asked by officers why he drove into the water, Mr. Victory told them that "I've done it a thousand times."
Deputy Anthony Miller investigated the incident. No charges are expected to be filed.
