FAYETTEVILLE -- University of Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long issued a statement Friday regarding a photograph indicating Arkansas Razorbacks basketball coach John Pelphrey could have had contact with two 2012 recruits in violation of NCAA rules.
The photograph on CBSSportsline.com shows Pelphrey with Sylan Hills juniors Archie Goodwin, rated a prominent prospect for 2012, and Trey Smith.
It was reportedly taking at high school tournament last December but NCAA rules prohibit coaches from off-campus contact with current high school juniors until July 1.
"We became aware of a potential compliance issue this (Thursday) morning regarding contact with prospective men's basketball student-athletes," Long said through a statement Thursday afternoon issued through the UA Sports Information Department. "The facts are as we understand them to be at this time, it would appear to be a secondary violation. Before making any final determination, we will certainly take the appropriate time to review all of the facts and then act appropriately."
The Razorbacks played Tennessee in Thursday night's first round of the SEC Tournament in Atlanta.
