The Mississippi County Sheriff's Office has lost a member of its family with the death of Deputy Jim Hohn.

Hohn died Saturday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer, said Capt. Larry Williams, patrol commander for the agency.

Hohn had worked as a K9 officer at the sheriff's office since July 7, 2005. Prior to that, he had worked as an animal control officer for the city of Osceola and was a reserve officer for the Osceola Police Department.

Hohn had been on sick leave since March 31, 2010, Williams said.

"Jim was a real good officer," Williams said. "He was dependable and did his job. And he was good at it."

In his off-duty hours, Hohn worked as a bricklayer, Williams said.

"I worked with him for many years down at Osceola," Williams said. "He was a great asset to the department. "He will be dearly missed."

Hohn is survived by his wife and children. Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Funeral Home in Osceola.
