The Charlevoix Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is proud to announce the DAR Good Citizens for 2010-2011.
They are Zachary F. Skelton of Armorel High School, Rachel Kathryn Bowers of Blytheville High School, Lydia Elaine Howard of Gosnell High School, Danielle Lauren Hicks of Manila High School, William Hayden Rowsey of Osceola High School and Jamilya Hooks of Rivercrest High School.
This year's Good Citizens were honored at a luncheon Tuesday by the Charlevoix Chapter and will receive the special DAR Good Citizen pin and Certificate at this event.
Approximately 11,000 schools across the nation participate in the Good Citizen program with the Daughters of the American Revolution. Only one student from a school may be selected for this honor. Selectees must be seniors and must exemplify the qualities of leadership, dependability, service and patriotism at their schools, homes and communities. These DAR Good Citizens represent the best of the best at the six Mississippi County public high schools.
Zachary Skelton, representing Armorel High School, is an honor roll student, was selected All-State, All-Region, All-Conference for baseball and All-NEA and All-Conference for basketball. Zach is in AHS Gifted and Talented and also a member of the FBLA, Beta Club, FCA, Trio, Leadership and French Club. Through his school club affiliations Zach has been involved in community service for the Humane Society, March of Dimes and the Food Pantry.
Rachel Kathryn "Katie" Bowers represents Blytheville High School, where she is Target Club president and a member of the Spanish Club, Art Club, Trio, Beta Club and FBLA. Katie is on the varsity cheer squad and has been involved with the Odyssey of the Mind. She was a delegate to Arkansas Girls State and represented the senior class on the homecoming court. Katie is on the Youth Leadership Committee of the First Baptist Church where she teaches vacation Bible school and has participated in several mission projects.
Representing Gosnell High School is Lydia Elaine Howard. She ranks first in her class academically. Lydia is secretary of the FBLA and participates in district and state competitions. She is also a member of FFA, High School Choir, Beta Club, French Club, Trio, and Readers' Club. She participated in the Mississippi County Youth Leadership Development Program. She works in the Fairview Baptist Church nursery and teaches "Children's Church." She also serves as teen leader in her church.
Danielle Lauren Hicks is the representative of Manila High School where she is an honor roll student. Danielle serves as vice president of the French Club, secretary of the Senior Class, secretary of Beta Club, secretary of FBLA, and vice president of FCCLA. She is also the sports section editor of the Lions Echo Yearbook. Danielle is a member of the High School Cheer Squad. Through her clubs, she has been involved in community service projects for March of Dimes, Arkansas Children's Hospital, Make A Wish and Susan G. Komen Foundation. She also volunteers at a business, All About the Fit, which helps women with breast cancer. She has just returned from a church service project to Africa.
Selected from Osceola High School is William Hayden Rowsey. He is an honor student and vice president of the Osceola High School Bible Club. Hayden is a journalism student and a member of the Drama Department. He has participated in the 4-H Youth Leadership Program, Tone, receiving a Certificate of Completion and Stamp Out Smoking. He has been involved with the EAST Lab, working with his classmates to create projects to benefit their school. He was a volunteer for the Special Olympics and is an active member of the First Baptist Church in Osceola.
Representing Rivercrest High School is Jamilya Hooks, who is on the academic honor roll and a member of the National Honor Society. She is a four-year letterman for Lady Colts Basketball and also serves as manager of statistician for Rivercrest Lady Colts. Jamilya is also on the High School Track Team. She is a member of Math Club, Library Club, Colts for Christ, A-Team, FBLA, FCCLA and the Key Club. She also belongs to the Order of the Eastern Star, 4-H and the New Salem MB Church. She has attended the Mississippi County Youth Leadership Development Program.
One of the six Mississippi County Good Citizens has been selected by an independent panel of judges as the Charlevoix Chapter's nominee for the Arkansas Good Citizen. Resumes prepared by the students, including how they fulfilled the requirements of a DAR Good Citizen, a patriotic essay, school transcripts and letters of recommendation were used to select the state nominee. The Arkansas DAR Good Citizen will compete at the national level with a candidate from each state for the National Good Citizen Award and Scholarship.
