Monette seniors learn about severe weather

Monette Fireman Robert Chambers presented a program on tornadoes and sever weather to the Monette Senior Citizens earlier this month and advised them to be watchful and alert for changing weather conditions.

"Tornados can occur at any time of the year," Chambers said. "So it is very important to stay informed about approaching storms, listen for watches and warnings and know the difference."

Tornado and severe weather tips were given by Chambers.

"Develop a plan, have frequent drills, and know your county map," Chambers said. "Most of all, listen to NOAA weather radio or your radio and TV for information. If a warning is issued or if threatening weather approaches, then move to a shelter or an interior room or hallway. Stay away from windows and get out of automobiles.

"It is important to have a disaster supply kit containing a three-day supply of water, non-perishable food, blankets, clothing, first aid kit, flashlight and batteries, and a battery powered radio."

"You need to practice and maintain your plan after making it," he said. "Preparedness information, combined with timely severe weather watches and warnings, could save your life in the event severe weather or tornadoes threaten."

Chambers closed by encouraging people to make safety a year-round thing by checking smoke alarms and batteries to be sure they are working properly.
