Riverside hosted the 2A Junior High Regional Quiz Bowl competition Saturday, Feb. 6. The Riverside team, under the direction of Brenda Hutchison, won runner-up in the Region competition qualifying them to participate at state.
There were seven schools involved in the Regional competition - Riverside, Walnut Ridge, Buffalo Island Central, Sloan Hendrix, Rector, Marked Tree, and East Poinsett County.
Quiz bowl is a competition of four rounds of academic questions. The competition began with three preliminary rounds with each school competing for the afternoon seeding positions.
The afternoon consisted of single elimination rounds with the team losing the match being eliminated from the remainder of the competition.
Regional winners were Walnut Ridge, first place; Riverside, second place; Sloan Hendrix, third place; and Buffalo Island Central, fourth place.
The state competition was held Saturday, Feb. 27, in Arkadelphia.
The Riverside Quiz Bowl team once again came up a winner bringing home the third place state trophy.
Riverside team member Logan Meurer was named All Region and All State tournament.
In state competition they defeated Midland, Buffalo Island Central, Ola, and Dermont. They were defeated by Conway Christian which went on to take first place in the state.
Members of the team include Dakota Booth, captain; Logan Meurer, Wesley Sanders, Morgan Hill, Kent Hill, Daniel Willis, Skye Booth, Jacob Jordan, Cody Booth and Brock Adams.
Hutchison said she is very proud of the team. "They represented Riverside well," she said.
Scott Dunkerson served as the judge, Brock Adams assisted and Skye Booth was the scorekeeper.
"We appreciate the team and all of the helpers," Hutchison said. "They played seven games in the state competition."
