Republican U.S. Senate candidate Gilbert Baker will be the guest speaker at Thursday's meeting of the Mississippi County Republican Committee. The meeting will begin with a Dutch-treat dinner at 5:30 p.m. at Sharecropper's, followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. at the Bush-Thornton Building.

Baker, currently a member of the state Senate, was first elected to the Arkansas Senate in 2000. He ranks fourth in senate seniority and serves as co-chair of the Joint Budget Committee and vice chair of the State Agencies and Governmental Affairs. He also serves on the Arkansas Legislative Council, the Public Health, Welfare and Labor Committee, Legislative Facilities, Children and Youth Committee, Senate Efficiency, and Academic Facilities Oversight Committee.

Baker is a retired instructor, academic adviser, and administrator at the University of Central Arkansas, with more than 20 years of service to higher education. He and his wife of 28 years, Susan, live with their family in Conway.

Baker is one of nine Republicans seeking the party's nomination to run against Sen. Blanche Lincoln. The other Republicans are Randy Alexander, Kim Hendren, Jim Holt, Conrad Reynolds, Curtis Coleman, Tom Cox, Buddy Rogers and Fred Ramey.
