There were 458 early votes cast for today's special election, according to the Mississippi County clerk's office.

Blytheville voters are considering a 1/4-cent tax to replace two sunsetting 1/8-cent taxes.

According to an ordinance passed last month by the Blytheville City Council, the estimated $730,000 a year from the permanent tax would be used exclusively for the Blytheville police and fire departments.

"(The reinstatement of the 1/4-cent tax would) improve the police and fire departments by adding personnel, offering better pay, purchasing better equipment, adding new facilities, maintaining a Protection Class 3 fire rating and the proper repair and maintenance of existing facilities," the city ordinance reads.

Voting ends at 7:30 tonight. Polling locations include the Blytheville High School girls gym, Aldersgate Baptist Church and the AAMOD Building.
