American Greetings Corp. says it is cutting about 200 jobs as the company adjusts for weaker sales in the ailing economy.
American Greetings spokeswoman Patrice Sadd said Friday that employees were informed of the layoffs on Thursday.
The Cleveland-based company is eliminating between 100 and 120 jobs at a plant in Bardstown, Ky. About 60 layoffs will be split among two plants in Osceola, Ark. and Ripley, Tenn.
American Greetings is also slashing 15 jobs at its Carlton Card Retail division at its Cleveland headquarters.
The layoffs will come during the company's fourth fiscal quarter ending Feb. 28.
The company announced last year that it would close 60 of its approximately 415 stores across the country by the end of February.
Calls to the Osceola facility were not immediately returned late Friday.
Mississippi County Judge Steve McGuire did not know any of the specifics of the layoffs, but did comment on the situation.
"Certainly we are very sad about any citizen of Mississippi County losing a job. But we are optimistic that the economy will turn around," McGuire said. "We are also very thankful for the many businesses and industries we have in the county who are good to their employees and treat them appropriately."
